Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Chinese herb?

The first thing to know is that Chinese herbs aren’t just plants. They can be minerals or animals too. In fact, there are hundreds of different substances that have been used by herbalists to treat illness for thousands of years.

What is a Chinese herbal formula?

Chinese herbs are almost never used by themselves. They work best when they are combined with other herbs. A Chinese herbal formula is the term used to describe when several herbs have been combined to treat a specific illness or health condition. After the consultation, your herbalist will create a combination of herbs that is best for your unique health concern.

What is the training of a Chinese herbalist?

The knowledge of how to safely combine herbs and use them in formulas has been passed down from generation to generation over thousands of years. Today, East Asian herbalists go to school and study for many years to learn this ancient art. Free Range Health herbalists have all completed advanced degrees in East Asian medicine, which includes herbal training. In addition, our herbalists are all certified Diplomates of Oriental Medicine by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine.

Are Chinese herbs safe?

Chinese herbs have been used for thousands of years to treat disease and illness. When used correctly, they are extremely safe and have very few adverse effects. When you get a custom herbal remedy from Free Range Health your safety and well-being is our top priority.

What about contaminants?

Pesticides, chemicals, and heavy metals are all real concerns when taking natural substances. Free Range Health uses Evergreen Herbs for our formulas. They have strict quality control and manufacturing processes in place to insure the highest-quality product available. This includes 15 laboratory tests that screen for a wide variety of toxins including heavy metals, pesticides, and bacteria.

I am taking other medications. Can I still take Chinese herbs?

Most herbal formulas will not interact with your prescription medications. Free Range Health herbalists evaluate all of your medications for possible drug-herb interactions before prescribing any formula. It is best to take your herbs on an empty stomach at least 2 hours away from your meds.

How do they taste?

It depends on your custom formula and the condition for which you are being treated. The qualities of the herbs have an effect on the taste. Most people eventually get used to the taste of their formula.

What if I don’t like the taste?

If the taste is really too much for you, Free Range Health will put your powder into capsules for an additional fee.
